There is indeed a firmware for the 7i43 annd 5i20 called SoftDMC, and I 
think it does PID on the FPGA.  SoftDMC is not supported by emc2, and I 
dont think anyone has any plans to add support for it.

The Hostmot2 firmware, which *is* supported by emc2, does pwmgen, 
stepgen, and encoder counting on the FPGA, but the PID is done up on the 
PC, by emc2's "pid" software component.
