Certainly it should be easier than adding an encoder to a 1J Bridgeport head, however.
If you want to keep manual operation, then you need a way to disengage the Z leadscrew, at the least. As long as the X motor can be made to coast, then that could just be left connected all the time. But, if you have a ballscrew on the X, you can't let go of the handwheel without locking it in some manner.
