Right now I do not control my spindle speed from EMC at all. I do it by
buttons that are electrical in nature, but are actuated by hand. The mill
has a variable speed drive and I change speed by pressing buttons that run
an air motor.

OK, that's not a problem to use NC contacts. Does this mean that I do not
need to even define gearchange.1.sel pin at all if I set gearchange.0.sel to
be connected to the microswitch?

Do you have gearchange implemented anywhere?

Thanks Andy, this gearchange seems to be a godsend, and a good self
documenting feature that is easies than a bunch of muxes to understand.
