There is some code on rtai.org which claims to be a realtime USB stack
for RTAI.
I have been trying to compile it, but it is badly bitrotted. In fact I
am mot sure if the version there could ever have compiled, as it seems
to have problems other than changed/deleted/moved kernel calls.

I think there might be room for both EtherCAT and realtime USB drivers
for EMC2. Running the 7i43 in realtime via USB seems like a very
attractive proposition for low-end and small/cheap systems. However
the 5m distance limit on USB is likely to suggest EtherCAT for larger
and more distribted systems.

The EMC2 Hostmot2 drivers already abstract between PCI and Parport
interfaces, adding RTUSB seems plausible, if non-trivial.

I like Firewire, but it is really quite a rare interface to find
built-in nowadays.
