Yup!  2.3 didn't have Jeff Epler's fix for the parallel port sharing 
with Linux, and didn't
look up the upper address range for the port from the BIOS.  10.04 with the
later EMC, 2.4.?? has this, and so it finds out that the ECR is not at 
the standard 0x402
offset.

Interrupts are not used, so that doesn't matter.  But, I suspect the 
10.04 and newer EMC
will make it work on the mill.
