I will do a lot of repetitive motion testing this afternoon, with an LVDT
and 6.5 digit multimeter to measure the position.  I'm going to implement
some slightly more sophisticated logic first, along with a multiplexer instead
of the tri-state buffers.

I'll report back tomorrow :-).

I don't want to have a long sensor element because one use of my design
will be in a continuous loop track application with multiple carriages.

Yes, before announcing victory over the issue You definitely should
check, if any error cancels out as You travel backwards over the
places, where different encoder readers are sticked together.
