Have to concur. Around '82 I wrote an HPIB "Talker" implementation in
Intel 8080 assembler. With some tristate buffers and a panel-mount HPIB
socket, it drove an HP printer without hassles. (Only over the standard
short HPIB cables, though. Jon's 30 foot effort is very impressive.)

It was logging the digital signalling (call control) traffic in the
first generation of PCM telephone pair gain system, which we were
designing at the time for Australia's then only carrier. (OK, there were
two suppliers, so the other guys did one too.)

The book I cadged the protocol state diagram from was an application
note for an IEE488 interface chip, but it seemed easier to implement the
part of the protocol that I needed, in software, than wrestle with the
chip.
