Generally stone is cut with diamond tooling and lots of water. Spindle 
speeds are relatively low, between 1500 and 8000RPM depending on the tool.

A router will work for a while but the water will kill it pretty 
quickly. As Ben says, the dust/mud gets everywhere so you need to 
overbuild and pay lots of attention to keeping it out of the screws and 
rails. Obviously rust is also a fairly major problem. Make sure you have 
grease nipples on your ball nuts and slides so you can regularly grease 
them. If you want to do a lot of machining, making up some sort of 
central lube system would be worthwhile.
