Of course you can. I have a machine set-up running like this now. But as some others have already said, the speed of software step generation will be your limiting factor. If I had to do it over I would have taken a different route with my set-up, and used hardware step generation (probably with a Mesa 5i25 and one of its daughter cards). You can increase your speed with the drives internal "gearing" at the expense of resolution. I had to do this to get acceptable speed, taking an 8000count/rev system down to 500. This large step in turn made tuning the drives a little more difficult.
