Assuming you can ping a machine inside your firewall/router then 
I would think the next question is do you have a  connection to the
outside. eg "ping sunsite.unc.edu" for starters. 
Then set '4.2.2.2' as a temp dns; this is an AT&T DNS.
That should give you some hints on where the problem is.
