I have a block heater in my little Toyota Matrix, and when it's below about -20, I plug it in, and turn it on an hour or two before we try to start the car in the morning. It *does* make a difference. The car engine does turn over better than without it. Simple, reliable. Buildings here used to have (and, at work, still have) block heater plugs. But, now with fuel injection, the old "if it does not start in three rrRRRrrr-rrrRRRrrr's" when turning the ignition key go back to bed" no longer is an issue; the car simply starts. But, the engine makes less noises if the block heater has been turned on for a while beforehand. John A.
