Put LinuxCNC on a system like a BeagleBone with just enough RAM and storage for 
itself plus a small command buffer. Skip the GUI and anything fancy. Then feed 
in commands from another system by USB, Ethernet, RS-232 etc.

Could be something to replace controllers in vintage CNC systems like an Anilam 
Crusader II or M without completely replacing the entire system.
