Other respondents have shown you how to diagnose the problem you observed.

As a point of information, I have not had any difficulty with gmail
since I switched to it more than a year ago after my precious ISP's mail
server got blacklisted. As an aside, keep in mind that Google, Amazon,
and the other big hitters run vastly distributed systems and it is
difficult to generalize from behavior of a particular instance of one of
their servers. Sometimes hosts go bad (due to hardware problems, sure,
but due to human error more often that they like to admit).

When I was still using my old ISP, occasionally my postings simply
disappeared on the way to the emc maillists.

I found it helpful to change my emc-users and emc-developers
subscription options so the sourceforge list server acknowledges receipt
of each of my postings.

It's not so obvious how to get to these options. In the case of this
emc-users list, go to
https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/options/emc-users/<your subscription
email address>, and follow instructions.

Alternatively, start from the bottom of the list info page,
https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/emc-users, where it says
"To unsubscribe from Emc-users, get a password reminder, or change your
subscription options enter your subscription email address:" and you'll
end up in the same place.

Schematically, the confirmation messages look like the following-

---snip---

Subject: emc-users post acknowledgment

Your message entitled

     Re: [Emc-users] xxx xxx xxx

was successfully received by the Emc-users mailing list.

List info page: https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/emc-users
Your preferences:
https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/options/emc-users/<my subscribed
email address>

---snip---

Notes:
1) of course the receipt messages contains useful timestamps in its header
2) I filtered my receipts into a separate mail folder so they didn't
clutter my regular emc-* folders

Regards,
Kent
