Your solution sounds like the one I have here: http://blog.f1oat.org/2013/09/01/the-webcam-mounting-bracket-after-machining-work/ The initial vertical alignment of the camera is painful, but when it is done, it is a pleasure to set the zero on the workpiece so quickly. On my setup, the only drawback I have is that the camera Z position is fixed. So, the camera field of view (and the accuracy) depends on workpiece thickness.
