I made a 600+ mile round trip last week to pick up a load of NMTB 30 tooling for $1,000. A very nice surprise was the lot included a Kennametal Erickson quick change spindle from a Bridgeport. The guy had swapped it for an R8 spindle so he no longer needed all the 30 taper stuff. Didn't mention or picture the spindle in the Craigslist ad or mention it on the phone.
Ohhhyeahhh. $1,700 spindle and ?-thousand in various tool and collet holders for $1,000. :) I got to looking at that and looking at the Acra and figured the spindle might fit. Pulled it out, bearings are defekt, looks like the bottom ones may have been turned around backwards, and they were rusty. (I wasn't the first person taking this apart.) The top bearing must have been replaced at some point, shielded (not sealed) bearing in better condition than the open top one on the BP spindle. Now for the catch. The Taiwan built Acra uses a left hand thread nut, the Bridgeport is right hand thread. Easy fix, remove the bearings from both and switch the nuts! (But not bothering to reassemble the original Acra spindle.) Just had to bore the ID of the Acra nut to match the BP one so it'd fit over that section of the BP spindle. So now I have all the toolholders I should ever need, and some I may never need, good spindle bearings *and* quick change. =) Also have a motor on the X axis, here's a short video. I bought new ones then bored and reamed instead of making 14mm to 5/8" adapters. Hopefully the bad spindle bearings were the source of all this noise. I really do not want to take the VS head apart!
