Indeed not. In fact all three are in different planes. The top ones wrap
around a bevel gear in the spindle, and the bottom (index) one picks up a
bolt head on the spindle shaft.

I also proved that if you put the sensors 180 degrees out of phase with the
gear teeth then the results are poor :-) (ie, it isn't that one hole should
be centred on a tooth and one on a gap, as I carefully arranged it at
first).
The annoying thing is that I know that, but just didn't bother thinking
about what I was doing:
