Gene,

'This new Toshiba 2T drive doesn't expose its "block" size to the user,
but I suspect its 4192 if not bigger.'

I have one of those drives, they're nice. fast, quiet, and reliable.
Assume its a DT01ACA200?
The 4k sector thing is completely hidden from the system on the other
side of the SATA port.
It shows itself as 512 byte to the system and deals with everything else
internally.
The only issue it can cause is with partion alignment, which just slows
down access slightly.
Theres a partition alignment tool here:
https://storage.toshiba.eu/cms/en/support_services/advanced_format.html
If your board has AHCI it wont have any problems with the size of the drive.
Theres usually some key like F12 that lets you choose a boot device at
startup, if you select the HDD that way it might not time out so quickly.
If you've swapped out the SATA cable and ruled out the PSU Id reflash
the motherboard BIOS just in case its become corrupt or theres a later
version.
Failing that, and assuming the drives work in another machine, Id
conclude its the board.
Outside chance it'll work, but have you tried it with a USB to SATA
cable? A lot of boards let you boot from USB either from boot order
settings or the F12 thing above.
If you dont have one the cables are next to nothing on ebay and amazon.
