I found it! I have no clue what the difference between
#102    =       [[#<variable>] + #<nother_variable>]
is but removing the extra [] fixed it.  The top of the board and its half 
holes  are done, so to save 90 minutes etching the bottom, I did the 
bottom drill file first to see if the holes would meet in the middle of 
the boards thickness.  They appear to, although I saw the unguided #61 bit 
wibble a bit as it touched (the bot.etch file would have spotted a starter 
dimple for the drills in the middle of a pad that would have stopped that) 
but its about half done with the bottom etch now and looking usable or 
better.  There is a text file to label the pads the cable is soldered into 
once this one is done in about 40 minutes.  That may wait till morning as 
its 23:00 here and my feet are killing me.

So I should have a working encoder for the lathe again sometime tomorrow.
