I have tried flashing the firmware on it with the mesa utility prob_rfx2 and
no change
I've even loaded hal manual loaded  the driver and did a show for the pins
there were no stepgen pins listed include it after dmseg

That I do not think is the complete error message, hal's errors are
generally more explicit than that. 

If you have network cabling to that machine (and frankly not having it
cripples things like this), and if your local network is both isolated from
the internet by a smart router and is using host files to define your local
net,then you can do "ssh -Y machine-name", answer the password requester
presented to log into that machine, and run it from that terminal.  When it
fails you will have the error msg on screen and can do a mouse copy/paste
directly into your email client so you can show us exactly what it said.

Looking at the last 100 or so lines of that machines dmesg output can also
be educational.
