My father (will be 76 this October 13th) had lens replacement a few
years ago. Now he only needs glasses for reading so he got Varilux
photochromic lenses that go from zero correction to somewhere around +4.

The new lenses also block UV so he has built in blu-blockers.

My eyes are off kilter. I need -5 in the right but only -3.25 in the
left. At 43, close vision is still real good in my right eye but it's
getting to where I need an arm stretch for my left one, when wearing my
contacts. When I was a teen I had macro vision in my right eye, could
focus as close as an inch, without the contact lens. Made it real easy
to read tiny marking on microchips.

But wait, it gets odder. When people with ordinary normal eyes alternate
which eye is open and closed, they see the world shift left and right.
When I do that, my view also goes up and down and also *rotates* a
little, but very little sideways shift.

I cannot wear glasses because they are literally a pain in the neck.
They cause a strain that feels like I'm being very slowly stabbed with a
dull knife at the base of my skull. I've had several optometrists claim
they could get glasses made that wouldn't do that but all I've tried
haven't done the job. Even if they would be usable without causing me
pain, one little whack and bend and the alignment would be off. So I've
exclusively worn contact lenses the past 26+ years.

Even zero correction safety glasses are painful to wear so I stick to
goggles or shields with a single flat plate. Any refractive difference
between my eyes is right out.

I'd love to get intra-corneal rings but -5 is way outside their
correction ability.
