I did the same few years ago - attached CF card through SATA adapter (bought on ebay) to D525MW board. Installing 10.04 on it worked just fine. I would suggest checking, if BIOS recognizes it (checking boot device list might be quickest way). What version of Ubuntu are you trying? IMHO trying different version is an option.
