Gregg, Using the Anilam control panel in the way you described is absolutely BRILLIANT! This is why I read this list religiously, some of the threads and ideas are amazing. Thank you.
One of the first things I need to do is clear the bikes away from the electrical cabinet door and get on w/ the electrical conversion. I'll leave the control panel to last, but I would love to work on it and post anything I find out on making it work. Sounds like you have a start w/ the chip piece of it. I'll shoot you an email offline. I have a D525MW and there's a 2nd comport on the board, so I just need to add a breakout for the port, which is $5 off ebay. I really dislike usb to serial converters and hearing how usb can reduce latency, glad I don't need to go there. Comport 1 is for the gs2 vfd. I think the trickier part is 'a driver' to go between the serial commands and HAL. I have not looked, but there might be a serial Hal component, or we need to write one. I would bet there is a good example of one that could be used as a template. Before I would get 'round-to-it,' I need to get my test bench (working well btw) installed into the mill. But, as I go through the existing electronics, I'll look at this as well cuz I'll need to leave in the large computer rack (guessing) to make this go... I worked in 'lower volume' medical device manufacturing and some of those ideas translate well. In the past, high-end robots were too expensive for consideration. While robot prices have been coming down, they still haven't made inroads in some places due to cost and expertise. Also, a vision issue w/ some medical parts is that they're shiny and the vision systems can't 'see' them well. Wire it up to a com port then use a terminal program to capture the output of each key to get the data you need to map each button to control LCNC. Might CNC it some day and a classic panel like that would look good with it. I bagged an 800x600 industrial panel mount touch screen LCD, new in box, along with a stack of circa 2005~2007 Dell Optiplex computers for $100. May as well say I got the monitor for $100 and the rest free.
