Hi all; I have put a crontab entry
34 * * * * xset -dpms in my user=gene crontab file The idea being to disable the screen blanker. This is a command that doesn't generate an error when I type it in. But I've just discovered that the subject mail file is just shy of a megabyte, containing: ================ >From [email protected] Sun Jul 12 01:34:02 2015 Return-path: <[email protected]> Envelope-to: [email protected] Delivery-date: Sun, 12 Jul 2015 01:34:02 -0400 Received: from gene by lathe.coyote.den with local (Exim 4.80) (envelope-from <[email protected]>) id 1ZE9tp-000591-SS for [email protected]; Sun, 12 Jul 2015 01:34:01 -0400 From: [email protected] (Cron Daemon) To: [email protected] Subject: Cron <gene@lathe> xset -dpms Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 X-Cron-Env: <SHELL=/bin/sh> X-Cron-Env: <HOME=/home/gene> X-Cron-Env: <PATH=/usr/bin:/bin> X-Cron-Env: <LOGNAME=gene> Message-Id: <[email protected]> Date: Sun, 12 Jul 2015 01:34:01 -0400 xset: unable to open display "" ================ A few thousand copies of this, adding one more per hour. And the blanker is not disabled in practice. So, why can I do it, but my crontab cannot? Thanks guys.
