It's easy to determine the size of a metric screw, just measure across 
the threads with a caliper. M3.5 is unlikely, because that size is not 
listed in bold print in the DIN list (as is M4.5, M7, M9, M14, M18 
etc.). It is, AFAIK, only used in low current (<16 A) electric equipment 
such as wall outlets and switches, line plugs and connector strips and 
boards inside electric appliances. So, I don't believe M3.5 is much used 
for mechanical work.
But clockmakers, violinmakers etc. all have their special threads, 
sometimes very old, that are not listed in the DIN tables.
By the way: Also imperial threads are considered exotic over here just 
the same... ;-)
