Thank you John.  This discussion has been enlightening.  As for ER's on 
my lathe, it would be difficult as I would have to start from a spindle 
face designed to interface with the machined pocket in the rear of a 
bolt mounted chuck. I had 2 of the 3 jaw variety on it but they were 
anywhere near centered, so its been wearing a 5" 4 jaw for quite a 
while, with a .0001" indicator used to adjust jaw by jaw for centering.  
A time sink to do that, but it works. I need a bigger lathe for sure, 
the spindle thru hole is too small by about an inch. I can't pass a rod 
of more than 3/4".  It will happen if I don't expire first. :)
