Only reason I can come up with is torque is lower during the backlash. Someone 
however posted stepper motor characteristic with lower torque at higher speed 
and this is as expected if flux is lower at higher speed. With this 
characteristic lower max_accel would make sense for higher speed since more 
torque is needed to accelerate faster.
