Yes, these are Whirlpool-made.  Many of the 
frequently-needed parts are available on eBay or Amazon, and 
sometimes amazingly cheap.

Hell, this super-duper washer was listed at $1000, we got it 
as a close-out for $900.  I'm sure it has paid for itself, 
as our city water has gotten quite expensive.

No, ours has a pause button.  Press once, it will stop and 
unlock the lid, press twice to cancel the cycle.  It may 
take 10 seconds to unlock if the motor was running.

With it spinning at 1200 RPM, I would not want to defeat the 
interlock.  Since the lid is counterbalanced, it would start 
flapping without the lock.

(There is a secret unlock trick, I think you stick a knife 
in a certain spot and it can open it if the lock were to jam.
