A common alternative to Pressurised Water[1] was molten sodium. Both have their drawbacks. Molten salt would avoid the need for high temperature, but restarting if the system ever freezes would be very difficult. I did a lot of heat treatment research years ago using nitrate/nitrite mixtures. They sit there inert at up to 500C, without boiling or evaporation.
