I could give you my machine config, but it might be confusing, as it is not
"textbook optimal"
Start here by googling "linuxcnc xhc-hb04" and see what you get.
Basically:
1)
loadusr -W xhc-hb04 -I xhc-hb04-layout2.ini -s 4 -H
There are at least 2 button sets, mine is "layout2"
2)

net home halui.home-all <= xhc-hb04.button-home
I'll add text from a file below - you can see that I've had it for a while,
