but but, I wasn't doing it right, all 300 patches applied without a problem when I followed a recipe from one of the gents on the linux-rt-devel mailing list. But it then died on the make defconfig, missing makefile for my arch. Their still noodling that one. patches to update an rt kernel will often be several hundred individual patches merged into one tarball. Common practice.
