The status messages often do change between versions. A big example of
this was when joints and axes were split up. The status messages changed
quite a bit then. Multi spindle support was another biggie. These were
two big examples but there are plenty of other smaller changes that have
affected the messages. You can pretty much guarantee every official
release is different.
The messages won't change between successive compiles of the same
version, as long as you compile on the same architecture. An x86 version
is almost undoubtedly going to be different to an x64 version though.

At the top you claim "Internally the data is represented by a tree of
structures." and this is also what I found in stat_msg.hh file. I do not think this
change between versions. It is common to have some kind of structure, CANopen and TCP/IP
or UDP/IP have it. I do not think these structures are supposed to change between version
or different compiles.
