I'll have to crack the manual on the plain one. I've three of the d 
models here, but only 2 in service. TLM as this list has nicknamed my 
7x12, "The Little Monster" is still running on a 5i25 and two bobs.
Retrofitted with a 1HP treadmill motor thats run via one of the Pico 
systems pwm-servo drivers, from a 130 volt supply, its had its turn 
around times slowed just to keep from stripping the teeth off the drive 
belt. With a 5" 4 jaw, there's a fair bit of flywheel there. :)

You should be good to go then. Unless you want to rigid tap. This needs a 
decently high res encoder with index on the spindle.

Because a properly setup vfd can often do a reverse faster than the Z can 
follow and stay synched, You may have to build a hal network to slowdown 
the turnaround so Z can keep up. I'm getting comfy editing hal files so 
yelp if you need help there. How many gears does your spindle have?
