First, decide what kind of a backup you want. If you want a disk image then you will need a same size disk to restore the image to. Use the standard UNIX "dd" command to make an exact image clone. The dd manpage explains more.
If you want the save the files then just use "tar" or "zip" If you want to save an entire filesystem the old UNIX standard is "dump" Again "man dump" will tell you more. There is also no end to the number of apps that put up a screen and then just call dd, tar or dump when you clock a button If the drive is on its way out and it sounds like it is, then buy an SSD and put it in yur computers. I would not buy another spinning mechanical disk. Put the SSD in and do a copy and run off the new copy and put the old drive in a safe place. The SSD will make the system much faster Next step. set up a REAL backup system that is automated and runs periodically and that keeps an older versions of files. My backups run hourly and all the important files are backed up off-site. This is rare that you get a warning, usually, the drive fails with no warning.
