I think the smallest they do is 26mmx26mm <https://www.ebay.com/itm/1MP-CMOS-OV9712-1280X720p-MJPEG-30fps-Mini-UVC-USB-Camera-Module-Board-6mm-Lens/323864792581> They state 32x32 but you can snap off the edges. You can focus these by undoing the clamp screw and screwing the lens in and out. Depending on the field of view you want, you may want to go with a 12mm lens rather than the standard 6mm.

Reads good, but they are huge. No way could one of those be squirreled
away inside the bottom of a G0704 head. Closer to spindle centerline yet

spindle lock ring and I've screwed it up several times with passing
clamp bolts. So the next go at this goes inside the casting. This ELP
folks have some with focussing lenses, but those are about 5x too big.
51mm just for the lens. A fixed focus lens at 3" for closeup stuff
would be ideal. Might have to glue a closeup lens to the one link I
posted, but i might be able to put it in the rear of the casting if I
could still get to the head mount bolts.

Thanks for the name, Les, they do make nice stuff and the prices aren't
that scary.
