I have never let it worry me too much. Though I do have a bunch of
Zeiss probes from a CMM that incorporate a piezo element as well as
the kinematic Renishaw-style thing.
(I have not bothered to work out how to use the Piezo part)

One problem with aligning the spindle is that the cable would get wrapped up :-)
Many of the non-cable systems only work in one orientation. Though
those are becoming less common, I think.
