Are you sure that isn't what already happens? (I guess that Halscope

I would expect the Z axis backlash reverse to happen when the Z axis
actually changes direction, based on the encoder direction change.
Have you considered a floating tap holder? You wouldn't need much float.
Yes, as a matter of fact, Gene reports 2 mils of backlash
comp. I find it hard to believe THAT is the cause of sloppy
threads, especially on a small-light machine. I would think
it has enough flex that that would not cause the thread to
be harmed. I'm guessing there is more movement or a
following lag on the reversal that is causing the issue.
