They used to build these with fancy analog circuits -
today you can get cheap uP with 14bit A/D and the rest
would 'just' be a 'little' software - Easier than
SDR(Software Defined Radio) - but I wonder if they just
use the older chips?

Hmm, rather nice chip! but, you have to program a serial
EPROM, and it looks like you have to do a calibration
procedure on every chip and then program a value into the
EPROM to get proper operation. That sounds like a but of
complication for production. Maybe I misunderstood.
