Backlash will certainly make thingsw difficult, as in effect you are
trying to tune two systems with one PID. There is the motor+leadscrew
system, which has a very low inertia and a high frequency response,
and the motor+ballscrew+moving axis system, which has far more inertia
and a much lower frequency response.

You _could_ try adding more deadband.
