I use Fusion and understand the 'fit point spline' business, so I will
try that on the next suitable project.
I wasn't aware of the ability to calibrate a canvas.
I do find VCarve Pro useful for most 2D work, but being able to use
Fusion's 3D extrude commands, etc, would be of even more use, on a lot
of jobs.

You can create a "Canvas" from a photo in Fusion, and can then
"Calibrate" the canvas using two known points to get the geometric
scale correct.
I then (manually) dot around the image with the "fit point spline" to
get an outline.
This works well when I have no access to the physical object, and has
given good results. For example this brace to stop a crack growing was
made using a photo that was emaled to me, plus a diameter measurement.
