I think that this part is not the best way, an analogue output voltage
would be best measured directly by an ADC, and is likely to offer
better repeatability than a 555 timer circuit.

The 7i87 is s smart-serial card, and three of them could connect to
the 7i74 you were considering.

What's the machine? LVDTs and RDVTs are interesting and precise, but
somewhat old-fashioned.
