I'll take a look at the 7i87. It should do the work, but I'm always trying
to use what I know if possible.

I'm not sure how they work exactly but I know an RVDT should perform great
with the amount of movement I need on those arms (I'm guessing +/- 3° at
maximum). So my idea is to sense the pivot of those arms with and RVDT.
Given the harsh environment it sounds like the best solution. Also I can
pretty much make them the size I want. I need a compact solution. I plan to
make 5 or 6 of these gauges with two arms each working in differential
mode. Each one is moved to the workpiece with a pneumatic piston and they
can run on linear rails with protective covers.
