Actually going through customize-group gets you to things that
work.

I made the mistake of poking at the source to find the variable
to set, and found a different variable from what  shows up in the
group buffer -- and that was the one that broke for me.

Dont remember its name, but it's defcustom had a :type 'list --
that was causing  it to break.
Customizing emms-player-list does not have this problem; I
apologize for being vague about the one that was broken.
