I just read your blog posts - pretty cool. But why not accept the
patch? If that option does not work for you (or others using gvfs),
they can simply not use that option.

It  still works pretty well for me, and I bet many others :) Example:
I have a headless server, there is no gnome/gvfs/... whatsoever, but
would like to use this patch. I use awesome and i3 at times, none of
which have this issue.

I would also argue that this is an issue in gvfs / gnome, which should
be fixed there. Example: it detects that the mount is happening, it
detects it's encfs-automount, could have a blacklist of file systems
not to go bother (eg, not create .Trash folder). It must have
something similar already? I'm not familiar with the code, but I would
suspect nothing happens if I try to mount a read only file system, or
another sysfs, tmpfs or dev somewhere on the system?
