Dear friends,

in Northern Finland we arranged the NCRB Twin Seminars titled "Crisis
Centres and Violence against Women. Dialogue across the East-West and
North-South Divides", 23-27 November, that took place at Oulu, the
capital of the Oulu county and at Rovaniemi, the capital of the
(Finnish) Lapland county. The first part of the seminars closed the NCRB
- A Network for Crisis Centres for Women in the Barents Region, the
Nordic-NW Russian development project; the second part, arranged in
collaboration of the NCRB research network and the Gendered Violence in
Schools and Teacher Education in Barents research network, brought
together scholars engaged in research on these topics and issues.

The professional and scholarly communities were transformed into a
political community with a strong commitment and belief in "An End in
Sight" a demonstration on Sunday, 25 November. Together we were some 100
women (and some men) from 10 countries. The appeal for Women's Peace in
the Barents and Arctic regions was formulated during the seminars,
outlined at a separate ad hoc multinational workshop comprised of women
with long experience and many "new comers", many from Russia who were
attending the very first demonstration in their life.

The message will be further discussed at Taking Wing - Conference on
Gender Equality and Women in the Arctic to be held in the Finnish
Lapland, August 2002 under the auspices of Finland's chairship of the
Arctic Council; violence against women and prostitution and trafficking
will be one the three main themes at the conference.
