Dear Rada, thank you for your posting. I am a lawyer/law teacher in
Washington, DC and my clients face very similar experiences. More and
more, abusive partners are using the protection order law and court
system as yet another way to harass and humiliate the real victim by
filing cross petitions for protection orders and/or contempt motions re
visitation provisions of the woman's own protection order.
Unfortunately, the court's are allowing this strategy to work. I have
had many recent experiences that remind me that justice is a constant
struggle. Judicial education and training is imperative, as well as
having an effective way to monitor the court system. We need to collect
and use these stories to help affect social change.
