Discussed Intro to WRA Thoughtful reflection about an other can lead to reflexivity: imagining yourself in someone else's position and then seeing the world/yourself from that point of view. This new understanding can lead to positive action. Critical reading is like a conversation with the text. We will start with reader response journal entries and then expand to the variations. Read "The End of Summer" by Kimberly Gorall, then worked through it paragraph by paragraph in the way you should respond in margins as you read. First questions: Why wasn't she raised like a girl? Why the title? Why is mom blunt? Audience? What's the point? When is it? "Margin" notes: She's one of the boys enjoys baseball strict family, lack of communication cigarettes, coffee--tension prayer book indicates traditional family mom's head down--nevousness, shame Set in the 1960s HW: Read "Ruth's Song" by Gloria Steinem, make notes as you (re)read, and write a one-page reader response in your journal.
