Hi Daniel,
For me this still works with Enigmail 1.6 on Thunderbird 24.2.0 on
Windows XP SP3.
When you hide the expert settings, the menuitem Automatically
decrypt/verify messages is hidden, but the setting still takes effect.
When checked, the emails are decrypted/verified without the need to
press Ctrl+D.
Can't test this on Debian though...
