This was, in fact, the proposal I originally pitched at IFF. The trainers I spoke with were mildly in favor of it, but they raised an objection: yellow scares people. It makes people think something is about to go wrong, when we'd be using it just to signal "unverified sender" or something similar. Likewise, if we use a red light to signal "this message was not encrypted", that also scared people. They encouraged us to think of a system that would convey information without also triggering people's fears about yellow and red lights. That's when I went back to the drawing board and started thinking of icons that conveyed information without using three-stage lights. So -- to us, I think a three-stage lamp makes perfect sense. But people who are just learning privacy tools, who live in hostile regimes, who are scared about the secret police ... let's be careful before we flash a yellow or red light at these people. (In other news, Enigmail is being used in Pakistan to help journalists communicate securely with Europe and the United States. This is really cool! :) ) _______________________________________________ enigmail-users mailing list [email protected] To unsubscribe or make changes to your subscription click here: https://admin.hostpoint.ch/mailman/listinfo/enigmail-users_enigmail.net
