This was, in fact, the proposal I originally pitched at IFF.  The
trainers I spoke with were mildly in favor of it, but they raised an
objection: yellow scares people.  It makes people think something is
about to go wrong, when we'd be using it just to signal "unverified
sender" or something similar.  Likewise, if we use a red light to signal
"this message was not encrypted", that also scared people.

They encouraged us to think of a system that would convey information
without also triggering people's fears about yellow and red lights.
That's when I went back to the drawing board and started thinking of
icons that conveyed information without using three-stage lights.

So -- to us, I think a three-stage lamp makes perfect sense.  But people
who are just learning privacy tools, who live in hostile regimes, who
are scared about the secret police ... let's be careful before we flash
a yellow or red light at these people.

(In other news, Enigmail is being used in Pakistan to help journalists
communicate securely with Europe and the United States.  This is really
cool!  :) )
