While at UXForum I was approached by two people who are involved in training people in the proper use of Enigmail. Two in particular made good suggestions that I think could be incorporated with very little pain.
A representative from Front Line Defenders said that the subject line armoring was a good idea, but it was making it difficult for his users to search their messages. He requested we look into ways to pre-decrypt the subject line when the message first arrives, rather than doing so once the message is opened. My suspicion is this would be easy to do badly: the first problem I can think of is that if you're in the middle of composing an email message when an encrypted message arrives, you could have your workflow interrupted by a passphrase prompt so that Enigmail could do the pre-decryption. Figuring out how to do this right will take a little work, but I think it's a good thing for us to look into: the Front Line Defenders rep said this is a significant pain point for them. Justice and Peace, a Netherlands-based group, said accessing the key manager requires too much in the way of menu navigation. Justice and Peace requested we look at adding an "Open Key Manager" hotkey combination they could give to their users. I think this is a pretty good idea: the key manager is a central enough component there really should be a hotkey sequence. I'm throwing these two ideas out here on the Enigmail-Users mailing list so we can get feedback from current users. What do you think? Would these be helpful to your current workflows? Do you see any problems that would arise? Let us know -- we want to hear from you. :)
