At work (which is the reason for SMIME) I use both. Communicating with
external people is often done with PGP if possible, while coworkers use
SMIME.

I have accidentally sent messages signed with PGP instead of SMIME which
irritated the coworkers that don't use it.

Since then I have added the button telling me "This message will be
unsigned and unencrypted" or similar and always press it to see if it
chose the right standard (or use the Enigmail menu).

I thought about suggesting to have the button say "This message will be
sined using PGP", which resulted in the idea of having the icons show it
too.

Average users probably don't use both standards?

Perhaps use the green checkmark for people who only use one method and
allow "advanced" users to chose the different icon?

I was wondering about that myself, but it just came to my mind while
writing the mail...

True, but showing the user which one is being used assures that the
correct one is being used.
